Women in bodybuilding are gathering more and more prominence and with the rise of bodybuilding 'pseudo-celebrities' on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc there has also been a rise of the 'cult' followings. If we're not careful the industry will devolve into nothing more than internet memes and selfies and that takes something away from those who have worked hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle and who inspire people to make positive changes in their life.

We all know people who are updating their status every five minutes and the photos they post are very carefully construed. Even photo shopped
at the extreme. My question is, are these really accurate representations of the individual or are they merely a projection of who the individual wants to be? Facebook is making it easier for figure competitors to spend more time and energy criticising their own bodies and wishing they looked like the local figure/sports model superstar.

So I am looking for a vehicle of transparency. But I am guessing not too many coaches are prepared to put it out there the types of eating plans they may offer clients (of course according to all client variables such as food sensitivities, pharmaceutical enhancement (I don't go there), contraindications, goals, contest class i.e figure, bikini model, fitness model, physique).

I don't see this as giving away secrets....as what will work for some will clearly not work for others. But I think that as our sport grows, the newbies in particular need some extra help and advice on balance. Of course we want to hit the stage in peak condition and some want to be super lean

I make it a habit to ask people who sign up for my newsletter what their #1 struggle is with nutrition, exercise, mindset, etc. This is important for me because it gives me insight into what Team BC clients are working to improve and how I can help. The answer I get the most is this:
I want to find balance with my eating and exercise. I feel like I am caught up in the all-or-nothing pattern of doing really well during the week and then blowing it all on the weekend, just to start the cycle again the next week.

Also, I think a good coach will ask specifics about where your metabolism is at. I use a metabolic classification document so that I can clearly ascertain where a client's metabolism is at before I start. This also helps me determine whether or not that client should even be contemplating competing. A whole range of factors determine your metabolism including nutrition history, body composition, ethnicity, metabolic blockers, sleep, age and diet history. This can tell a coach a lot about the client's metabolic capacity, resilience, glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity thus enabling them to dispense suitable advice.

The truth is though, is that we can NEVER avoid stress, uncertainty and fear. So the central question is not how we avoid uncertainty and stress, but how we relate to discomfort.

How do we live day to day with difficulty, with our emotions, with the unpredictable encounters of an ordinary day? When we doubt that we're up to it, we can ask ourselves this question: "Do I prefer to grow up and relate to life directly, or di I choose to live and die in fear?
